I haven't read the specific book, but I LOVE "East of the Sun and West of the Moon!" I instantly knew what this painting was about when I saw the white bear with a young woman. Here's what I love:

-Inuit clothes! I know the white bear in the traditional fairytale is technically "albino/magical brown bear" and not "polar bear," but I'm surprised that nobody's put two and two together, especially since the fairy-tale's from NORWAY and one of the most prominent characters is the NORTH WIND.

-The browns and white/grays combined with hints of blue are really, really well balanced. I love me a good winter scene. The bear looks like part of the snow! And yay, the Northern Lights! <3

-The bear's huuuuuuge size combined with his gentle manner. It took me a minute to go "wait, she's a teenager/young-woman. Even polar bears aren't THAT big." And then I went "SCREW YOU LOGIC, IT'S A FAIRY-TALE." I also love his face being painted so elegantly. It's almost like Japanese sumi-e, with how his white face is created with two really black lines for his eyes and nose. Also, bear fur! Most people can't get fur right, especially in a difficult medium like watercolor.

Somehow I find it okay that he clearly has no paw-pads--combined with his gigantic size, it gives everything that soft, dreamlike feel you'd have from a childhood memory.
